Common electrical faults we investigate

Most fault-finding visits start with something that has stopped working, keeps cutting out, or no longer feels right. These are the sorts of problems that come up regularly.

  • RCD keeps tripping

Power cuts out and the residual current device will not hold, or trips again soon after resetting.

  • MCB / circuit breaker keeps tripping

One circuit repeatedly goes off — often sockets, lighting or an immersion circuit under load.

  • Sockets stopped working

A single socket, a ring of sockets, or part of a room suddenly has no power.

  • Lights not working

Dead fittings, circuits that fail when switched on, or lighting that trips the board.

  • Intermittent or partial power loss

Power comes and goes, or only part of the house is affected.

  • Immersion heater problems

No hot water from the immersion, a tripped immersion circuit, or a faulty switch/accessory.

  • Buzzing, heat or burning smells

Accessories that crackle, feel hot or smell of burning need urgent attention. Switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and arrange professional help — do not keep using the fitting.

  • Outdoor and nuisance tripping

Garden supplies, outdoor sockets and damp fittings are a common source of awkward trips.

How fault finding works

The goal is to identify the cause properly, explain it in plain English, and then repair what can sensibly be fixed — or quote further work before it starts.

  • 1. Discuss the symptoms

When it started, what was in use, whether it trips immediately or only sometimes, and what you have already noticed.

  • 2. Visual inspection

Consumer unit, accessories and any obvious damage, heat marks, moisture or loose fittings.

  • 3. Safe electrical testing

Methodical tests to isolate the affected circuit and narrow down where the fault sits.

  • 4. Locate the likely cause

Appliance, accessory, connection, outdoor circuit, insulation issue or something further back on the wiring.

  • 5. Explain the findings

You get a clear account of what was found and what the sensible next step is.

  • 6. Repair or quote

Repair where practical on the visit. If more work is needed, you get a price first. Operation is checked after a repair.

RCD keeps tripping

An RCD that keeps cutting the power is usually doing its job: detecting current escaping where it should not. Repeated resetting without finding the cause is not a fix.

  • Common causes

Faulty appliances, damaged wiring, moisture ingress, outdoor circuits, insulation faults, loose or damaged connections, and circuit or accessory faults.

  • What helps before a visit

Note whether it trips with particular appliances plugged in, after rain, or when outdoor sockets are used. Do not tape an RCD on or keep forcing a reset if it will not hold.

Socket and lighting faults

Dead sockets, intermittent power, flickering fittings and switches that trip the circuit are everyday fault-finding work. The useful part is working out whether the problem is the accessory itself or something on the circuit behind it.

  • Sockets

Dead sockets, intermittent sockets, damaged faceplates, loose connections and circuits that fail under load.

  • Lighting

Lights not working, faulty switches, flickering fittings and lighting circuits that trip when used.

Immersion heater faults

No hot water when the immersion is on, a tripped immersion circuit, a faulty switch, a loose connection or an element/circuit fault can all present in similar ways. Not every immersion fault can be repaired on the first visit — testing comes first, then a clear recommendation.

Fault finding that looks for the cause

  • Methodical testing

Symptoms are investigated properly rather than swapping parts at random.

Common questions about electrical faults

Why does my RCD keep tripping?

An RCD that keeps tripping is usually detecting earth leakage. Common causes include a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, outdoor circuits, insulation faults or a loose connection. Persistent tripping needs proper testing rather than repeated resetting. There is a plain-English guide on the advice pages if you want more detail before calling.

Can you find an intermittent electrical fault?

Often yes, but intermittent faults can take longer to pin down because the problem may not show up constantly. Methodical testing and a clear description of when it happens usually help. If it cannot be confirmed on the first visit, that will be explained honestly.

What should I do if part of my house loses power?

Check whether an RCD or MCB has tripped in the consumer unit. If it will not reset, or trips again straight away, leave it and get it investigated. If you notice burning smells, heat, sparking or visible damage, switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and seek professional help.

Can a faulty appliance cause an RCD to trip?

Yes. Kettles, washing machines, dishwashers, outdoor tools and damp appliances are common culprits. If unplugging portable appliances stops the trip, leave the suspect item unplugged until it can be checked. If it still trips with everything unplugged, the fault is likely in the fixed wiring or an accessory.

Do you repair faults once you find them?

Where a repair is practical on the visit, that is the usual approach. If parts, further investigation or a follow-up visit are needed, you will get a clear explanation and a price before extra work starts.

How long does electrical fault finding take?

Some faults are located fairly quickly. Intermittent, complex or hard-to-reproduce problems can take longer. The aim is methodical testing rather than guessing, so duration depends on what the symptoms show.

Do I need to turn the power off before you arrive?

Not usually for the whole house. If something is overheating, sparking or smelling of burning, switch off the affected circuit if you can do so safely. Otherwise leave the installation as it is and explain what has been happening when James arrives.

Jame’s from JSC Electrical installed a bathroom cabinet for us that needed to be connected to the mains and an extra electrical power socket in the kitchen. His work was exceptional, he was very thorough and left everything clean and tidy after he had finished. We will require more work in the near future and I won’t hesitate to get him back to do it.

This is the second time I have used JSC Electrical. Each time James has been very thorough and completes the job with care and professionalism. I have recommended JSC Electrical to my friends and family, who have had work done too. The jobs I have had done is an installation of a new plug, replacement of a new mirror vanity unit for a bathroom, outside light installed and LED lights on outside steps.
